Marine Harvest volunteers with students after their “Working It Out” maths through sport event
Staff at Marine Harvest in Castletownbere went back to school for the day to take part in the “Working it Out” event with 93 students from Scoil An Chroí Ró Naofa (Castletownbere), Scoil Chaitigheirn (Eyeries) and Urhan National School (Eyeries).
“Working It Out” enables Marine Harvest staff to introduce classical maths concepts to students through fun sports activities in which they applied maths to everyday life and discovered the importance of maths for future careers
The students worked in teams with their Marine Harvest volunteers to complete sports circuits in which they then completed a mathematical calculation based on their results. Addition, multiplication, fractions, percentages all took on a new importance as the students focused on the completion of the task in their efforts to be crowned the winning team.
Principal Anne McNally, Scoil An Croi Naofa, said: “This event has been wonderful for our students; it’s so important that they link what they learn in school to the wider community. Meeting the team from Marine Harvest is enabling our students to value local enterprise and the opportunities for future careers here in Castletownbere.”
